Mystery Illness in Peru

Villagers in Carancas, Peru, have been stricken with a mystery illness following a meteorite crash on Saturday Night. A fireball was seen burning across the Andean sky which crashed into a field located in sparsely populated highland near Lake Titicaca.

The villagers saw the fireball and heard the impact and believed it to be a crashed aircraft. When they arrived on the scene, they only found a crater 20m wide by 5m deep. They found no evidence of crash wreckage.

What they did find was a crater that emitted noxious, foul smelling, odours which made the villagers ill. The farmers complained of headaches, nausea and vomiting. Police who went to investigate the crater were also stricken with similar symptoms, prompting authorities to dispatch a medical team that reached the site today.

“The odour is strong and it’s affecting nearby communities. There are 500 families close by and they have had symptoms of nausea, vomiting, digestive problems and general sickness,” said Mr Jorge López, a local health department official.

At least 12 people were treated in addition to seven police officers who required oxygen masks and rehydration.

The farmers expressed fears that what appeared to be chunks of lead and silver around the site could contaminate the soil.

Another mystery revolves around the cause of the crater. An impact of this size would require the same energy as 1 kiloton of TNT, or a small tactical nuclear warhead, something which would show up on seismological surveys, but as yet, nothing has been found.

Is this illness coincidence, or caused from an extra-terrestrial impact, was it a meteorite to begin with? Stay tuned.
